Forty participants (34 women, mean age 25.96 years, SD 496) completed two sessions of EEG recording while performing the Attentional Networks Test for Interactions and Vigilance, assessing phasic alertness, orienting, and executive control. The task included both executive vigilance (detection of rare critical signals) and arousal vigilance (rapid response to environmental stimuli). The ERPs associated with attentional networks, previously observed, were also observed in this study, including (a) N1, P2, and contingent negative variation for phasic alertness; (b) P1, N1, and P3 for orienting; and (c) N2 and slow positivity for executive control. From the STAYER study's historical data, alcohol and drug use patterns were categorized as (1) having a current substance use disorder (current SUD) or (2) having recovered from a substance use disorder (recovered SUD). Chi-squared tests and crosstabs were applied to determine if any differences existed between the study groups. The study population exhibited a high frequency of childhood maltreatment, subsequent traumatic experiences, and concurrent PTSD symptoms. The current and recovered SUD groups exhibited no statistically meaningful disparity. Recovered women experienced a lower rate of physical neglect (p=0.0031), but a higher incidence of multiple lifetime traumas (p=0.0019) when compared to women who currently have a substance use disorder.
